In three steps.
1 Share the PDF From Files, Mail or Safari: tap Share and choose Yappy. On the computer, drag it into the window.
2 Pick a voice Ten voices, 31 languages. If the PDF is in another language, Yappy recognises it on its own.
3 Listen or keep it Press play, or send it to the press and you get an audiobook with chapters.

If the PDF is a photograph of paper with no text inside, the desktop version runs it through a local OCR before reading it. Not on the iPhone yet.
Questions about this
Is there a page limit?
No. A three-page article or a four-hundred-page thesis: the PDF is paginated whole and read whole. Since everything happens on your device, there is no character quota to burn through and no bill that explodes halfway into chapter seven.
What if the PDF is a scan with no text?
The desktop version runs it through a local OCR before reading it, and nothing leaves your computer there either. On the iPhone, not yet: if the PDF is a photograph of paper, the phone finds no text to read.
Does it strip headers and page numbers?
Yes. Yappy spots whatever repeats on every page — running head, footer, folio, journal name — and leaves it out of the script. Nothing ruins a reading faster than hearing “Chapter 3, page 47” every ninety seconds.
Can I listen to just one chapter?
Yes. Yappy looks for the document's real headings and builds a navigable index from them. From the library you choose which chapters to listen to or which ones to send to the press, and the audiobook comes out with those.
