Why is it free?
Because there are no servers to pay for. The voice is synthesised on your device, so listening costs nobody anything and there is no bill to share out. Cloud voice apps pay for a machine every time you press play, which is why they charge by the character or by the hour. Yappy cannot charge you for something that costs it nothing.
What happens if I never pay?
Nothing. Yappy keeps working forever, with all ten voices, all 31 languages and every format, with no ads, no account and no minute counter. The only difference is that on iPhone and iPad the perch holds three documents at a time: take one off and another fits. On the computer, not even that.
Is there a free trial?
No, and that is a decision, not an oversight. The three-document perch is the trial: it does not expire, it does not ask for a card, and it does not start charging on the eighth day. Nobody should wake up to a charge they do not remember agreeing to.
Can I cancel whenever I want?
Yes, from your Apple account, like any other subscription. They renew at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before. The lifetime purchase never renews: you pay once and that is it. And if you cancel you lose nothing that was free: you go back to the perch of three.
Why is the desktop free?
Because the paywall was built on mobile, and not on the computer. There, the printing press, the bottomless hanger, and the bridge come free. It's not a launch offer: the desktop is the machine that does the heavy lifting, and charging you to let your own computer work overnight made no sense.
